However, realizing independent dual-tunability remains challenging and requires more efforts. In this paper, we present an active metasurface where the magnitude and frequency of the resonant absorption can be continuously and independently tuned through application of voltage biases. Such a dual-tunability is accomplished at microwave frequencies by combining a varactor-loaded high-impedance surface and a graphene-based sandwich structure. By electrically controlling the Fermi energy of graphene and the capacitance of varactor diodes, we experimentally desmonstrate the independent shifting of the working frequency from 3.41 to 4.55 GHz and tuning of the reflection amplitude between -3 and -30 dB, which is in excellent agreement with full-wave numerical simulations. We further employed an equivalent lumped circuit model to elucidate the mechanism of the dual-tunability resulting from the graphene-based sandwich structure and the active high-impedance surface. We speculate that such a dual-tunability scheme can be potentially extended to terahertz and optical regimes by employing different active/dynamical tuning methods and materials integration, thereby enabling a variety of practical applications.

Tue, 07 Jan 2020 09:38:11 +0000 SJTU President Lin Zhongqin's Delegation Visit Europehttp://www.0o4v.cn/news/sjtu-president-lin-zhongqins-delegation-visit-europe/
During December 12 to 18, SJTU President Lin Zhongqin’s delegation visited France and the UK. In this paper, we propose and analyze cache-based content delivery in a three-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet), where base stations (BSs), relays, and device-to-device (D2D) pairs are included. We advocate proactively caching popular content in the relays and parts of the users with caching ability when the network is off-peak. The cached content can be reused for frequent access to offload the cellular network traffic. The node locations are first modeled as mutually independent Poisson point processes (PPPs) and the corresponding content access protocol is developed. The average ergodic rate and outage probability in the downlink are then analyzed theoretically. We further derive the throughput and the delay based on the multiclass processor-sharing queue model and the continuous-time Markov process. This work reports an effective and simple way to eliminate energy transfer in multicolor quantum dots (QDs)‐encoded microbeads by incorporating tetrapod CdSe/CdS QDs with a large Stokes shift (about 180 nm). Exploiting this unique feature enables the facile realization of a theoretical 7 × 7‐1 barcoding matrix combining two colors and seven intensity levels. As such, microbeads containing tetrapod CdSe/CdS QDs are demonstrated to possess a powerful encoding capacity which allows for precise barcode design. The ability of the Shirasu porous glass membrane emulsification method to easily control microbead size facilitates the establishment of a 3D barcode library of 144 distinguishable barcodes, indicating the enormous potential to enable large‐scale multiplexed detection. Moreover, when applied for the multiplexed detection of five common allergens, these barcodes exhibit superior detection performance (limit of detection: 0.01–0.02 IU mL−1) for both spiked and patient serum samples. Therefore, this new coding strategy helps to expand barcoding capacity while simultaneously reducing the technical and economic barriers to the optical encoding of microbeads for high‐throughput multiplexed detection.

Link of paper: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adfm.201906707

Tue, 10 Dec 2019 05:56:05 +0000 Goldsmiths Deputy Vice Chancellor Visited SJTUhttp://www.0o4v.cn/news/goldsmiths-deputy-vice-chancellor-visited-sjtu/
On the afternoon of Nov. 29, 2019, SJTU Vice President Xu Xuemin met with Mark d’ Inverno, Deputy Vice Chancellor (in charge of international affairs) of Goldsmiths, University of London, and his companions.

Xu Xuemin welcomed Mark d’ Inverno and his companions. The research identified an important microtubular regulatory protein, OsIQD14, which regulates the formation and seed morphology of the psyatory cells by influencing the dynamic changes of the microtube. This study not only identifies an important gene that regulates the shape of rice shell cells and then affects the grain shape of rice, but also shows that regulating the dynamic change and arrangement of microtubes can be an important target for rice grain control, providing a new strategy for crop breeding.

Dr. Yang Baojun of the Shanghai Institute of Plant Inglis/VIB of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the first author of the paper. As plants continuously adapt to ever‐changing environmental conditions, multiple environmental and developmental inputs need to be translated into changes of the MT cytoskeleton. Here, we identify and functionally characterize an auxin‐inducible and MT‐localized protein OsIQ67‐DOMAIN14 (OsIQD14), which is highly expressed in rice seed hull cells. We show that while deficiency of OsIQD14 results in short and wide seeds and increases overall yield, overexpression leads to narrow and long seeds, caused by changed MT alignment. We further show that OsIQD14‐mediated MT reordering is regulated by specifically affecting MT dynamics, and ectopic expression of OsIQD14 in Arabidopsis could change the cell shape both in pavement cells and hypocotyl cells. Additionally, OsIQD14 activity is tightly controlled by calmodulin proteins, providing an alternative way to modify the OsIQD14 activity. Our results indicate that OsIQD14 acts as a key factor in regulating MT rearrangements in rice hull cells and hence the grain shape, and allows effective local cell shape manipulation to improve the rice yield trait.

Translated by Iga Kowalewska

Reviewed by Wang Bingyu

Tue, 12 Nov 2019 07:05:12 +0000 Orsay Museum Curator Visited SJTUhttp://www.0o4v.cn/news/orsay-museum-curator-visited-sjtu/
On the evening of Nov. 1st, the curator of the Orsay Museum Laurence des Cars visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University and became the 9th lecturer of the Wenbo lecture hall. At regions surrounding grain boundaries, the majority of activated dislocation slip traces were found to form in pairs across grain boundary, and the basal-to-basal (B-B) slip pair is the dominant type. Strain accommodation around the grain boundary interfaces is affected by both Schmid factor in the adjacent grains and the m’ value between these main slip systems. A mk value was proposed in this paper as the maximum value of the product of the Schmid factor and the m’ value of the adjacent grains to measure strain accommodation around the grain boundary interface, where a higher mk value would mean a larger local strain. It is suggested that the overall ductility of a Mg alloy could be evaluated by measuring its average mk value. As an evidence, the Mg-Gd-Y alloy tubes with higher mk value generally show higher elongations during tensile tests in this study.

Translated by Zhang Qianqian

Reviewed by Wang Bingyu

Sun, 04 Aug 2019 14:00:00 +0000 Otago University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Helen Nicholson Visited SJTUhttp://www.0o4v.cn/news/otago-university-deputy-vice-chancellor-helen-nicholson-visited-sjtu/
On the afternoon of July 18, Helen Nicholson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor from the University of Otago, New Zealand visited SJTU. To circumvent the difficulty, a prevalent viewpoint simplifies the neuronal morphology as a point representing the soma, and the excitatory and inhibitory synaptic currents originated from the dendrites are treated as linearly summed at the soma. Despite its extensive applications, the validity of the synaptic current description remains unclear, and the existing point neuron framework fails to characterize the spatiotemporal aspects of dendritic integration supporting specific computations. Using electrophysiological experiments, realistic neuronal simulations, and theoretical analyses, we demonstrate that the traditional assumption of linear summation of synaptic currents is oversimplified and underestimates the inhibition effect. We then derive a form of synaptic integration current within the point neuron framework to capture dendritic effects. In the derived form, the interaction between each pair of synaptic inputs on the dendrites can be reliably parameterized by a single coefficient, suggesting the inherent low-dimensional structure of dendritic integration. We further generalize the form of synaptic integration current to capture the spatiotemporal interactions among multiple synaptic inputs and show that a point neuron model with the synaptic integration current incorporated possesses the computational ability of a spatial neuron with dendrites, including direction selectivity, coincidence detection, logical operation, and a bilinear dendritic integration rule discovered in experiment. Our work amends the modeling of synaptic inputs and improves the computational power of a modeling neuron within the point neuron framework.

Translated by Iga Kowalewska Reviewed by Wang Bingyu
Thu, 18 Jul 2019 14:15:35 +0000 President of University of Queensland Visited SJTU http://www.0o4v.cn/news/president-of-university-of-queensland-visited-sjtu/
On the morning of July 3rd, a delegation led by President Peter Høj from the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia visited SJTU. In this study, we show that SUMO1/sentrin specific peptidase 1 (SENP1) regulates the development and function of MDSC. SENP1 deficiency in myeloid cells promoted MDSC expansion in bone marrow, spleen, and other organs. Senp1-/- MDSC showed stronger immune-suppressive activity than Senp1+/+ MDSC ; we observed no defects in the differentiation of myeloid precursor cell in Senp1-/- mice. Mechanistically, SENP1-mediated regulation of MDSC was dependent on STAT3 signaling. We identified CD45 as a specific STAT3 phosphatase in MDSC. CD45 was SUMOylated in MDSC and SENP1 could de-conjugate SUMOylated CD45. In Senp1-/- MDSC, CD45 was highly SUMOylated, which reduced its phosphatase activity towardSTAT3, leading to STAT3-mediated MDSC development and function. These results reveal a suppressive function of SENP1 in modulating MDSC expansion and function via CD45-STAT3 signaling axis.

Paper link: http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/early/2019/06/11/0008-5472.CAN-18-3497

Translated by ZHU Fengyan Reviewed by WANG Bingyu

Mon, 08 Jul 2019 16:14:23 +0000 Bulgarian President Rumen Radev Visited SJTU and Gave Speechhttp://www.0o4v.cn/news/bulgarian-president-rumen-radev-visited-sjtu-and-gave-speech/
On July 5, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and his delegation made a visit to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
